Tech giant Google is continuing to integrate the physical and digital worlds. Its latest endeavors focus on making homes more intuitive and automated in performing chores and lessening homeowners’ workload. As devices pile up in homes, the challenges grow to make them function in unison.
Google is not ignorant of this issue and has been actively working on retooling its Android and iOS Home Apps. In 2023, the emphasis was on improved support for the Matter smart home standard and designing more robust controls. This year, Google is expanding its portfolio of resources for developers. The most recent additions to Google’s arsenal of tools for a smart home ecosystem include the Devices and Structures API and the Automation API.
Both application programming interface solutions integrate different apps and services with smart home devices. However, Google is not planning to lead the way toward a more streamlined smart home experience solo. The company is granting developers access to its Matter infrastructure and tools.
The decision to grant access to Google’s new tools is, in essence, a way to empower developers to successfully launch new ideas by eliminating unnecessary complicated technical aspects of designing a smart home that create frustration and waste time. Now, integration is simplified thanks to the standard, which is easily adaptable to accomplish a specific purpose.
The two pillars of this new smart home ecosystem are Google’s Automation API and Device and Structure API. The Automation API uses Google Home’s automation engine and intelligent signals to manage home automation from an app. By using GenAI, this tool connects different smart devices, such as automatically turning on the driveway lights when the front door is locked.
On the other hand, the Device and Structure API facilitates access to 600 million connected devices, making it easier for developers to integrate features and devices. Some of the proposed advantages of the system include monitoring the availability of detergents or other household cleaning items and automatically ordering a new supply as food and other products begin to dwindle. It can also illuminate the driveway or porch for delivery services as they arrive.

These APIs allow developers to connect Matter devices to their app directly without requiring the creation of a new Matter fabric. They also benefit from faster and more responsive local control in their apps with the help of the APIs, simultaneously saving resources and time. The best part is that the homeowner can activate and revoke permissions, ensuring their privacy is respected. Not to forget, the security of the property will be heightened.
These APIs are only the latest batch of software solutions that join the existing line of APIs, which assist in bringing smart home devices online. Google continues to empower developers to design seamless interactions between their apps and smart home ecosystems, which homeowners can use at their discretion.
Enhancing the smart home experience starts with the basics, such as automating household lights and conserving energy. However, smart homes’ potential extends to heightened security, improved entertainment, and even fitness apps that could regulate the temperature and foster a cooler ambiance. The idea behind Google’s developer tools is to improve the usefulness of the smart home concept.
The waitlist for Google’s new APIs is open, and the full launch is projected to occur later this year. However, to guarantee a quality experience, Google will require developers who plan to use its Home APIs to pass certification before being allowed to launch their app.
Although smart homes are the main focus of these software solutions, developers are not restricted and can harness this unique opportunity to create apps that are not directly integrated with the home. The underlying software enables the design of workout and delivery apps through integration with Matter fabrics and intelligent signals. The Home APIs offer a pathway to create differentiated experiences that satisfy Android customers’ needs.

In effect, allowing access to over 600 million devices enables developers to create complex apps to manage any aspect of a smart home. It stirs up their creative energy and will enable Google to provide fresh, exciting ways of interacting with your home.
