The short answer is the earth’s first commercial error-tolerant quantum computer may be seen before the 2024 year end.

A report from livescience mentioned a quantum computer with “logical qubits” launching this year, skipping the plan of 2026.

The information came when QuEra (the startup that is building it) has dramatically reduced the error rate in qubits, leading to the availability of quantum computing with 256 physical qubits and 10 logical qubits, said in a statement.

However, it won’t run at its full potential and it does not perform as conventional computers interpret information in bits with the value either 0 or 1, quantum computers use qubits – which is beyond the understanding of 0 and 1, thanks to the laws of quantum mechanics.

The Role Of Logical Qubits

Quantum computing requires adequate physical qubits and logical qubits for task performance. Therefore, the quantity of qubits is crucial here.

Upcoming quantum computers will be available in different qubit sizes that grant varying productive results.

!

For example; In 2023, the Google Quantum AI Lab demonstrated quantum computing with three logical qubits that counts 2.9% error rate in total. On the other hand, Quera’s error rate is 0.5% with 48 logical qubits.

Logical qubit runs on error-correcting fundamentals in which the system relies on data redundancy, where the same piece of data is stored in multiple places.

When one or more physical qubits fails, the calculation still continues because the data is available elsewhere, hence reducing error rates.

QuEra Plans For Releasing Quantum Computers

Harry Zhou, a research scientist at QuEra plans to launch several fault-tolerant quantum computers with varying qubit formation at its heart.

Starting with a 30-logical-qubit, 3,000 physical-qubit machine coming out in 2025. In the coming days, 10,000 physical qubits and 100 logical qubits, is scheduled for 2026.

At 100 logical qubits, the system can perform correct calculations that exceed the capability of today’s supercomputers.

Who Else Planning For A Quantum Computer?

Google AI, Microsoft, Intel, and IBM are the major players involved in the generation of advanced quantum computers for the world.

Here’s the summary of the corporate giants in quantum computing trends.

IBM

IBM quantum Lab

IBM being the leader in the quantum exploration because together the IBM Quantum Composer and the IBM Quantum Lab jointly compose an online platform in which access to cloud-based quantum computing services facilitated by IBM Quantum.

In the light of quantum computing, IBM is planning to finish constructing a new quantum data center in Ehningen, Germany, this would give local quantum computing resources to Europe.

Google AI

Google quantum AI

Google Quantum AI is also in the parameter of pushing quantum boundaries for hyper and sonic computing calculation.

And they did well through a new quantum computer which is a staggering 241 million times faster than the quantum computer Google released in 2019.

Additionally, Google AI division designed Sycamore, a superconducting quantum processor which is capable of completing 47 years of computing tasks in just 6 seconds.

Microsoft

Microsoft quantum research

Microsoft is pushing forward towards the quantum realm by creating a pioneer cloud quantum computing ecosystem.

Microsoft’s ecosystem encompasses a plethora of solutions, software, and hardware, all accessible through the Azure platform, safely and securely.

The team and other expert minds in the journey of quantum pursuit, the company has delivered major updates including Azure Quantum Elements, a new system aimed to provide chemical and materials science by leveraging the hypes of HPS and swiftness of AI.

Intel

Intel quantum computing research

Like IBM, Intel is a pioneer in the realm of the semiconductor sector, putting extraordinary efforts in the development of highly-precise quantum chipset.

Its newly developed 12-qubit silicon chip, Tunnel Falls, extended its availability to the quantum research community.

In addition to this, Intel is partnering with the Laboratory for Physical Sciences (LPS) at the University of Maryland, College Park’s Qubit Collaboratory (LQC), a distinguished national Quantum Information Sciences (QIS) Research Center for quantum computing research and innovation.
