It’s happened. Despite all your due diligence, you’ve been scammed. You know it, and you’re furious. But now that it’s happened, you need to think about it with a clear head. The only way to recover your money is if you handle the situation smartly and methodically.

Here are the steps you should take if you’ve been scammed:

Decide Whether or Not To Contact the Scammer

This is a tough one. If you have any information that could help the authorities track down and prosecute the scammer, then, by all means, contact them. But if you’re just trying to get your money back, it’s probably not worth it. Scammers are notoriously difficult to track down, and even if you do get in touch with them, they’re not likely to give you your money back.

On the one hand, it can’t hurt to try. On the other hand, you could waste a lot of time and energy for nothing. If the scammer seems to be associated with an actual legitimate business, you can call the company and report the scam. They may be able to override whatever the scammer did and undo the damage.

Gather as Much Information About The Scam as Possible

This is important for two reasons. It will help you understand how the scammer operated and what to watch out for in the future. If the scam was by phone, use a reverse phone lookup service to try and find out who the caller was. If you were scammed online, try to find any email addresses, usernames, or other identifying information that the scammer used.

Put all this information together and organize it. If you decide to contact the scammer, you’ll need to have all your ducks in a row.

Call The Authorities

If you think you’ve been scammed, report it to the authorities. This will help them catch the scammer and maybe even get your money back. In the US, you can file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission or the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center.

Calling your local police department is also a good idea. Some police departments are better equipped to deal with scams than others, but it’s worth a shot.

Statistics show that only about 15% of people who are scammed actually report it. So even if you don’t get your money back, you could be helping to prevent someone else from being scammed in the future.

Know Your Rights

Depending on where you live, you may have certain rights when it comes to getting your money back from a scammer. For example, in the US, credit card companies are often required to give you back your money if you were scammed using a credit card. But regardless of where you live, it’s important to know your rights so that you can fight for them if necessary.

Contact Your Bank or Credit Card Company

If you used a credit card, debit card, or wire transfer to send money to a scammer, you might be able to get your money back. But you need to act quickly. The sooner you contact your bank or credit card company, the better your chances are of getting your money back.

If you wired money, ask your bank to trace the wire transfer and try to get the money back that way. This can be difficult, but it’s worth a shot.

If you used a credit card, you can often dispute the charges with your credit card company. You’ll need to provide evidence that you were scammed, but if you have it, they should refund your money.

Debit cards are a little different. If you report the scam within two days, you may be able to get your money back. But after that, it’s up to the bank whether or not they want to give you a refund.

Finally, something like Paypal also has a dispute process that you can go through to try and get your money back.

Hire a Scam Recovery Service

If you’re really desperate to get your money back, there are companies that specialize in helping people recover their money from scammers. These companies will often charge a fee, but they may be able to help you get your money back.

Some of these companies are legitimate, while others are scams themselves. So you need to do your research before you hire one.

There are no guarantees when it comes to getting your money back from a scammer. But if you act quickly and follow the steps above, you may have a chance.
