Lithium is a substance that belongs to the family of metals. This substance’s characteristic feature is that it has the lowest density compared with the other members of the metal family.

Moreover, the electrochemical conductance potential of this metal is greater than the other metals.

It is the reason behind the introduction of lithium in the world of batteries. The smaller size of the lithium ions diffuses very fast through the liquid solution present in the battery.

It was in the year 1991 when the lithium batteries were first introduced in the world. From that year to date, the world has not seen a further introduction in batteries.

The lithium-ion batteries, once introduced, are consistent used in the market. It was Sony who commercialized the battery in their cameras, and the rest is history.

Let us discuss the before and after in the old of batteries and see how the lithium battery changed everything.

Battery world before the year 1991

In 1791, a scientist concluded that an electricity form of phenomenon generated when two metals interact with each other. Based on this, Volta produced the first battery in the year 1800.

He has piled up the discs of copper and zinc separated by a soaked brine cloth. It was the first practical model of a battery.

After Volta’s discovery, in 1936, Daniel’s cell was discovered by Daniell scientist. It consists of a copper jar having a copper sulphate solution in it.

Sidewise he took a porous earthware and kept hydrogen suphate in it and dipped a zinc rod. Now when both the copper pot and earthen pot are placed together, electricity is produced.

After this invention, some revolution hits the batteries’ industry, and we get to see rechargeable batteries and dry cells. Several batteries, like lead-acid batteries, Leclanche cell, and zinc-carbon cell, were introduced in this era.

All these cells were used for the storage purpose of the electricity, which can be consumed later. Till 1991 these batteries trended in the market, but later on, the lithium batteries were introduced.

After the year 1991

The lithium battery concept was developed by the scientist in the 1960s but did not popularize until it was commercially used in the year 1991. After that, significant companies changed the batteries they used in their devices to the lithium batteries from here.

They are durable and have a longer life compared to other batteries in the market. After this year’s mobile phones and other electronic devices have started to adopt the lithium-based battery technology to run their devices.

After that, the storage units, like large electrical grids, started to use lithium batteries to store the energy produced. It has become possible due to the lower price and more value delivered by them.

In the home solutions also the lithium batteries have shown their importance. All the small batteries fitted in the remotes and clocks of your house are made of lithium-ion.

Moreover, the inverter battery that provides you backup whenever the electricity is not available is made up of lithium. In the past few years, lithium batteries have become an essential part of our lifestyle, which can’t possibly be replaced.

Conclusion

The introduction of lithium batteries to the modern world has changed storage units’ meaning for the electricity.

It is also beneficial for the environment because their life is long enough that you do not need to dispose of them any time soon, and if they stop working, it can be recycled and used again.

The growth of these batteries has not seen any downfall in the previous years, and it may grow more and more in the coming time for their usage in the renewable energy grids.
