Tesla CEO Elon Musk said on the company’s 2020 Q4 earnings call that all engineering work is now complete on the Tesla Semi, the freight-hauling semi truck that the company is building with an all-electric powertrain.

The company expects to begin deliveries of Tesla Semi this year, it said in its Q4 earnings release, and Musk said the only thing limiting their ability to produce them now is the availability of battery cells.

“The most important reason we’ve not hastened new products — such as such as Tesla Semi — is that individuals just don’t have sufficient cells for this,” Musk said. “If we had been to create the Semi at this time, and we can easily move into production together with the Semi at this time, but we’d not have sufficient cells for this.”

Musk added that the company does expect to have enough cell volume to satisfy its requirements once it moves into production on its own 4680 battery package, and it is a brand new custom made cell layout it created using a so-called’tables’ layout which allows for increased power density and, thus, range.

“A Semi would utilize generally five times the amount of cells a car would utilize, but it wouldn’t sell for five times what a car would sell for, so it sort of would not make sense for us to perform the Semi at this time,” Musk said. “However, it is going to surely make sense for us to take action when we could tackle the cell manufacturing restriction.”

That restriction points to the identical decision for the chance of Tesla creating a van, Musk additional, along with the lifting of this restriction will similarly make it feasible for Tesla to pursue the evolution of this type of automobile, he explained.
