Long-term unemployment can be very detrimental, and not only financially. People who are unable to work for long periods of time often suffer from depression, anxiety, and low self-esteem. Unemployment and COVID-19

The 2020 US job market was severely affected by the Coronavirus. At the beginning of the year–before the pandemic took hold in mid-March–the national unemployment rate stood at a low 3.6%. In April, the bottom fell out of the American economy and 20 million jobs disappeared. By month-end, 14.7% of American workers were unemployed.


The labor market recovered quickly and was able to recover. By November 2020, 6.7% of the workforce were unemployed. This number fell to 6.2% in February 2021. However, the picture is not all roses. Millions of Americans remain unemployed despite these gains.

1. Learn new skills

First, evaluate your skills. Are your professional certifications up-to-date? Do you have three credits left to earn a new qualification? This is the perfect time to refresh your skills and tie a bow on “nearly there” accreditations. Your resume will make you stand out and help you get the job.

2. Create an engaging resume

You have new skills, so it is time to update your resume. Revisit your professional summary and update your objective section. Use modern fonts and a modern layout. These sections should be included in your resume.

  • Your contact information is in a header section
  • Your professional summary, also known as an objective
