CB radios are primarily used for short-range communications. Made popular during the 70’s, CB radios utilize the 11 meter band with frequencies ranging between 26.965 MHz and 27.405 MHz.

The two-way voice communication service is an excellent communication medium for localized emergencies like natural disasters. It’s also perfect for highway communications between truckers and for fun for radio enthusiasts and hobbyists.

Although the popularity of CB radios has waned in recent years mainly due to the advent of cell phones and the internet, they still remain extremely popular among truckers, survivalists, and radio hobbyists.

Why is CB Radio Perfect for Emergency Communications?

A major reason why CB radios are still popular is due to their high reliability in the event of an emergency. Unlike cell towers and traditional phone lines that can fail during extreme weather conditions, CB radios work even when other means of communication have been disrupted.

In a disaster, CB Radio is one of the few ways to communicate that isn’t dependent on other people’s infrastructure or service.

In a disaster, normal communication like cell phone calls, texts, and internet access might not be available. That’s because wireless carriers have massive amounts of cell towers and internet servers across much of the country. If something happens to those services, it disrupts everyone’s ability to communicate.

Even in the event of small scale disasters like seasonal storms or minor earthquakes, conventional communication channels can be disrupted quite easily.

It doesn’t take much in the form of bad weather to compromise the entire cell phone network. This makes the ability to stay in touch with loved ones and emergency responders during a disaster one on your main concerns.

With just power from your car’s battery or a couple of AA batteries for the portable versions of the CB radio, you can always stay in touch with others during emergency situations.

While amateur radio, or ham radio, is one of the first lines of emergency communications, a handheld CB radio with mic is an essential tool in any survival plan.

The main advantage with the CB radio over ham radios is that they don’t need a license to operate, which makes them the perfect option for those who don’t want to take the FCC ham test.

Signal Range

CB radios are primarily meant for short-range communications, ideally 5-25 miles. However, a serious survivalist will know that there are ways to boost their range during bad weather conditions.

Radio signals can be transmitted in a way that makes it possible to communicate with other people over hundreds of miles away. But generally speaking, with a properly tuned antenna, it’s possible to receive and send out signals up to 25 miles.

If you’re interested in buying a CB radio as part of your survival plan during emergencies like natural disasters, there are numerous models to choose from.

However, you have to consider the environment in which you will be using the gadget before you make a decision.

Assign “Handles” or “Nick Names” to each participant. CB radio operators often generate long-winded mocire lyrics for each other during conversation (think of the old movies, where characters were always called “Breaker 1-9” and similar things
